Off to the Dark Side... AKA I now own a MacBook Pro.

So, I have taken a trip to the Dark Side (if you notice the image to the left, you can guess what I mean). So there was a few reasons for this decision.

Doing development work on a Unix based machine is usually a lot easier

Work is slowly rolling out iOS devices and we even have a few OS X devices floating around

Figure I should learn the OS (see the bullet above)

So what do I have? I got myself a late model (sounds like a car…) 2008 unibody 15″ MacBook Pro, 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo, with 4GB of RAM, 320GB Hard Drive, Lion installed with Microsoft Office 2011, Adobe CS5.5 Master Collection and a lot of the other “i” application from Apple.

So far it has been interesting getting used to the OS. It is a lot different from what I am used to (Windows 7 / Chromebook), but I am slowly getting used to it. I still seem to have issues getting applications installed or I am just not used to how it is done. Some applications come with the disk image file, while others are just binaries. So it has been interesting, to say the least (still can’t get Synergy to work…).

One of the early things I had to try and figure out was how to get dual monitors setup. On Windows it is a simple check box in the display settings, but Apple you have to drag this small little gray bar across to the screen you want to be your primary. Back-ass-words if you ask me…

Next thing I noticed was that unlike Windows, the firewall is not enabled by default. Not sure if this was because the person that had it before me disabled it or if this is how Apple ships Lion. Was a little weird to say the least.

The most annoying thing I have noticed, is I am used to “CTRL + <something” for commands like copy and paste, etc… OS X uses “Command” aka the “Windows Key” on my standard keyboard. Need to figure out if there is a way to remap some of these commands… or at least the damned keys!

Only time will tell how well I adapt to this OS.
